Cobleskill Richmondville Central School District recently issued the following announcement.
A Cobleskill-Richmondville based team were the overall tournament champions at the SUNY Polytechnic FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) LEGO League Competition this past weekend.
The Intergalactic Yobi Gang, consisting of William Miller, Connor Testa, Bill Bittner, Willhelm Bittner, Joanna McCann, Bryce McCann, also picked up 1st Place in robot performance. Their coaches are Joshua and Amy McCann, and mentors are Nick Paris, Alex Chacho and Nick Testa.
In the FIRST LEGO League competition, teams of 3-10 kids from grades 4-8 on school, club or neighborhood teams, combine LEGO Mindstorms system structures, motors, sensors and processors with user-friendly software to design, build, and program autonomous robots.
The competition is composed of four different challenges:
Robot Performance: Build and program an autonomous robot that will be able to complete as many points based missions in a 2.5 minute match.
Robot Design: present the robot design and executive summary explaining the programming and engineering of the robot to a panel of judges.
Core Value: Present to a panel of judges showing how they worked together with gracious professionalism and team work to accomplish their goals.
The Project: to identify a physical or social problem faced by humans during long duration space exploration, The Intergalactic Yobi Gang picked the problem of space debris and designed a “Robi,” a spaceship that will collect space debris and send it back to earth for recycling.
The Intergalactic Yobi Gang will kick their bricks to the Regional Championship Competition on Feb 9 at Duchess Community College in Poughkeepsie.
